cereal list generates syntax errors when called without $USER being defined

Bug Description
cereal expects $USER to be defined in order to work correctly.
cron doesn't define $USER, so cereal list generates lots of syntax errors:
/usr/bin/cereal: 141: [: =: unexpected operator
There is nothing in the documentation for cereal describing this dependancy.
