Bug Description
in order to get kubuntu plasma 5 running on my laptop I had to set the nomodeset option, otherwise X is inoperable, but I can switch to a console. I've read some reports that the kernel 3.16 might be having issues with modesetting for the radeon driver with kernel bisects mentioned, so perhaps this is the issue with the kernel bundled with the download being affected.
I installed from a pendrive made with unetbootin.
My chipset is an r700 so there is no closed source driver so I have to use the Radeon driver.
$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 14.10
Release: 14.10
$ uname -a
Linux super-R720 3.16.0-31-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 10 15:24:04 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV730/M96 [Mobility Radeon HD 4650/5165] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
I expected casper to boot into X. Instead it booted to a black screen. I had to edit the boot options in grub at runtime to add the nomodeset option.
Since installation I have had no real problems (other than some reported already on kde bugs such as crashing to boot screen which are fixed by using proposed updates.
