The DKMS package at utopic does not work as it fails at compilation against the kernel headers provided by the repository.
I looked for a newer package from vivid and installed it. It worked to I think it will be quick to fix that while copying the source package from vivid to utopic:
Here the output of dkms:
thopiekar@hp:~$ dkms status
broadcom-sta, 6.30.223.248, 3.16.0-29-generic, x86_64: installed
tp-smapi, 0.41, 3.16.0-29-generic, x86_64: installed
