bash history is not getting saved

opena a terminal and execute some commands nothing gets saved into bash history.

True, bash is not saving the history.
Ubutu 12.04 LTS i386, up to date.
.bashrc is correct and checking HIST... variables within the terminal trough echo $HIST... gives correct results.

Workaround that worked for me: delete .bash_history.
File will be re-created on next terminal closing.

Apparently bash_history is damaged after fresh install of the system.

This is likely user error as the .bash_history file inadvertantly ended up being owned by another user (likely root).
