Bug Description

Binary package hint: base-files

Currently the "Documentation" link in the server motd points to the generic server page (not the server documentation page):
" * Documentation: http://www.ubuntu.com/server/doc"

I think it would be nicer if this links directly to the official documentation page of the installed distribution. See attached patch for /etc/update-motd.d/10-help-text

This seems really worth fixing since the existing link redirects you to some marketing page about Ubuntu Server which is rather silly when you are trying to find documentation about Ubuntu Server.

http://www.ubuntu.com/server/doc has been setup as a redirect which takes you to a marketing page about Ubuntu Server instead of documentation regarding how to use Ubuntu Server. While we could SRU the patch to take you directly to documentation about your release of Ubuntu that would require a fair amount of work. It'd be better if we could get the redirect fixed on the Ubuntu web site.

IMO it's worthwhile guarding against the nonexistence of lsb_release before using it.

I agree with Daniel. NAK for now. Unsubscribing ubuntu-sponsors for now. Please update the patch and resubscribe when submitting an updated debdiff.

I know only use lsb_release if it is available.

  * update-motd.d/10-help-text: modify server documentation link to be the
official documentation page of the installed distribution. Thanks to Tim
Kuijsten for working on this. (LP: #744253)
  * rather than depend on lsb-release test to see if lsb_release is available
    (LP: #575885)
