Bug Description

Source package: avahi
Release: Ubuntu 9.10
Package: avahi-daemon 0.6.25-1ubuntu5.1
Architecture: i386

The daemon is now controlled by upstart. The local copy of the avahi-daemon startup script, /etc/init/avahi-daemon.conf, was modified by an administrator to disable avahi-daemon from starting on boot. Changes to a config file should persist, even if an updated version of the package is installed.

However, when a package update was applied, the local config was moved to /etc/init/avahi-daemon.conf.dpkg-old without prompting, and the package maintainers version was installed instead. The service started up on the next boot.

This bug is seriously annoying. apt should never just replace a file I've modified. Prompt me and give me a choice, or ignore the file difference altogether.
