strange arrow-key behavior after suspend/resume

Bug Description

After hitting Control-Z to suspend the aptitude job and then fg to resume it, the arrow keys behave strangely. Down arrow attempts to report a bug in the highlighted package, Right arrow displays the changelog of the highlighted package, left arrow shows or hides the bottom pane (where the description of the highlighted package is). It seems like perhaps aptitude ignores the escape character for the arrow keys?

 Unfortunately I was unable to reproduce this issue. Is there anything that you have to be doing in aptitude for this to happen? (Like installing a package?) Also could you provide more detail like what version of Ubuntu you are using, the version of aptitude, and what type of machine this is running on?

Ubuntu Hardy i386 on an AMD64 processor, aptitude 0.4.9-2ubuntu5.

Don't need to be doing anything special in aptitude.

One thing that may need to be clarified: The strange event only happens on the first keystroke after resuming aptitude. Subsequent keystrokes are fine.

And the down arrow no longer does a bug report, but instead fully expands the currently-selected group of packages and all subgroups, as if "[" were hit. (which makes sense if the escape character is getting lost, because up arrow is Esc[A, and so the [ would be the first valid character)

Is this reproducible using another shell? I can't reproduce this symptom using 8.10 and mksh.

I can reproduce it using Intrepid with bash or mksh. Terminal emulator is gnome-terminal.
