no progress while gzipping core in apport-gtk

Bug Description

Binary package hint: apport-gtk

For very large core files (like firefox), there is no indication that apport is still running. 100% CPU is used while the window doesn't redraw. Perhaps a fork'd gzip is needed instead?

I didn't think this was a dup of 61730 (which is about getting the core from the kernel). I was talking more about the final stage of apport-gtk where the coredump is gzip'd.

Ah, sorry, I thought you meant the core gzipping in apport itself, rather than in the GTK frontend. I saw a 'hanging' apport-gtk frontend on mdz's laptop last week as well, so this indeed seems to be an issue.

My understanding is that the core dump will be gzipped on the fly soon,
thanks to an enhanced kernel interfacae, and so these will be the same
stage.

     junk.
   * gtk/apport-gtk: Process pending GTK events after hiding the info
     collection window to avoid a hanging dead dialog.
   * gtk/apport-gtk: Do not count the lines of fields with binary data. This
     particularly avoids long delays with huge core dumps. (LP: #81979)
   * apport/ui.py, open_url(): Print URL to stdout, so that we can debug the
     weirdness in #83974.
