Bug Description

System suddenly became mute after months of operation. During debugging, I ran "alsamixer" from terminal and got "cannot open mixer: No such file or directory",

You have this file on your system: /etc/asound.conf
It is not part of Ubuntu standard installation, and it points to a soundcard you do not have. Please remove/rename it. Thanks!

Changed in alsa-utils (Ubuntu):

Thanks David...

Sound now works, fixed using alsamixer after some experimenting.

There were four S/PDIF choices and the the one that worked 1 of 0,1,2,3 had inexplicably been changed to 0.

As I recall, the /etc/asound.conf was an attempt during original install to get the audio working. It is now history.
