Bug Description

In both Lucid and Maverick, there is a PCM mixer volume control present on my HDA ATI SB, which does not affect output volume.
PA merges it, so there is a risk for volume range anomalies.
It is not listed in the codec proc file, so how and why is it created?

Okay, so traced this down to alsactl, which adds the PCM control from userspace. It is still a mystery to me why, I'm going to ask upstream.

To sum up, I had a long discussion with upstream about this, which starts at http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2010-August/031054.html
Long story short - as we're in freeze now, my suggestion is that we remove the softvol for Natty regardless of what upstream decides to do.
