Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 dev with alsa-utils 1.0.27.1-1ubuntu1 and after capturing sound with avconv for example "avconv -f alsa -i hw:0 /tmp/test.wav" (and even another formats like the codec flac with the container mkv) on playback the sound is nearly not hearable (avconv confirms that capturing the sound was successfull).

I have maximized the output- and captuting-sound with alsamixer as shown here (http://imageshack.us/a/img600/8800/dkg0.png) and this makes it possible that I can hear the sound a bit more. But the problem is that the sound is still quiet and I have to increase the volume of my soundboxes to a level there I'm hearing more sound troubles than the captured sound.

Also I have reset the sound to its default values (deleting /var/lib/alsa/asound.state and forcing a reboot without running alsactl store) which ended up in this configuration (http://imageshack.us/a/img845/7427/pl6f.png). This will capture the sound too but I'm not able to hear it again.

Have you tried to reocrd with either arecord or parecord from pulseaudio?

I'm not hearing any sound with arecord while I'm still able to hear a very quiet sound with avconv. Here is the terminal output:

sworddragon@ubuntu:~$ arecord /tmp/test.wav
Recording WAVE '/tmp/test.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
^CAborted by signal Interrupt...
arecord: pcm_read:2031: read error: Interrupted system call

After installing pulseaudio and pulseaudio-utils my system doesn't play any sound anymore. If I remove pulseaudio it is playing again but parecord will then logically fail with a message:

sworddragon@ubuntu:~$ parecord /tmp/test.wav
Connection failure: Connection refused
pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused
