[H97M-HD3, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all because of upgrade from 20.04 LTS to 22.04

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I have an Intel Nuc, Product Name: D34010WYK, i3-4010U, its hooked up a Samsung TV via hdmi. The sound defaults to HDMI/DisplayPort - Built-in Audio, Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output but that doesn't work. If I flip it to Digital Surround it works but since the TV only has a left/right speaker I would think stereo should work and doesn't. I confirmed the issue is the same if I boot off the desktop ISO and "Try Ubuntu", since I upgraded my system I thought maybe something wasn't right because of that.

Edit /etc/default/grub and add

intel_iommu=on,igfx_off

in line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="intel_iommu=on,igfx_off"

save file and update grub:

sudo update-grub

reboot

So the underlying issue is not fixed.

On my system audio (and any associated video playing) stops when changing audio to integrated hdmi output, i7-4790s haswell cpu with ubuntu 22.04.

I also have the problem with the HDMI sound.

It is Xubuntu 22.04.
On an HP G2 800 DM Mini, the audio works fine. After connecting a monitor via DisplayPort+HDMI everything is ok. The HDMI port appears in the choices and works. (It ist HA Intel PCH and HDMI , via aplay -l) )

Transferring an image (True Image) to an HP G5 400 DM Mini causes problems with the HDMI audio.
Several "HDMI ...not plugged in" appears in the Output selection. (although it is plugged in).
You can select it, but it doesn't work. (Here only HDA INTEL PCH is shown)

Even if I use a live Xubuntu with a USB stick, the HDMI sound doesn't work.

Whether Vxd and Vtd (Virtualization) is activated in the bios or not makes no difference. It still doesn't work.

Fixed on my system (i7-4790s haswell, ubuntu 22.04) with previous kernel update (uname -r -> kernel 5.15.0-40-generic). Before on my system HDMI output might produce little sound and then the audio seemed to stop buffering sound completely (resulting in output fail, stopped video or other weirdness).

intel_iommu=on,igfx_off grub-trick would fix the issue, now I've got GRUB_CMDLINE_DEFAULT="" in grub params and HDMI works; if I remember correctly the patch notes for the kernel said IOMMU is now disabled by default on some systems?

For me the problem was never an issue with recognizing connected HDMI audio outputs.

On my system HP G5 400 with Intel Kabylake Intel HD 630
Xubuntu 22.04:

I found this solution:

I installed HDAJackRetask inside alsa-tools.

Then I choosed Kabylake Hdmi - show unconected pins - choose the first (or all 3)
- override with HDMI - applyed and Install Boot Override.

So my HDMI-Output was no longer shown as unplugged, and it works, I get sound over HDMI.

(But honest, this is not realy a solution. There must be another soluton in the Kernel I think)

This leaves those of us with AMD processors out in the cold. Should I roll back to Ubuntu MATE 18.04 for a working system until you fix your update bug?

For those with AMD CPUs, rolling back to kernel 5.19.0-32-generic can bring my HDMI/DP audio device back. Sound is played properly.

Version - Ubuntu 22.04
Kernel - 5.19.0-38-generic
Processor - AMD Ryzen 7 6800U with Radeon Graphics x8
Graphics Card (onboard) - Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Rembrandt
(Laptop is a GPD Win Max 2)

The TV being used is an older Samsung model.

This issue is still present for me. Sound works perfectly well with windows, so I am 99.9% certain the issue is something in ubuntu itself.

Ran MOC with a looping sound file and then opened Pulseaudio Volume Control.

Under output devices, with the default device selected, it plays perfectly well. The HDMI shows up correctly under audio devices [HDMI/DisplayPort 2 (plugged in)], but when selected no sound emerges.

The output bar is showing that sound is being routed through that port, but nothing emerges. Option selected under advanced is just PCM (not sure what these do but it's best to report everything).
