Bug Description

Binary package hint: alpine

On a fresh install of Karmic I installed the alpine package using Synaptic.

I noticed that alpine would under some unknown circumstance start burning 100% CPU time and stay that way until the program exits.

Google yielded the following bug report on the alpine-info mailing list that sounds like it's the same problem:

http://mailman2.u.washington.edu/pipermail/alpine-info/2009-January/001546.html

According to that report a mismatch between the version of glibc under which alpine is compiled and the version of glibc under which alpine is running can cause the 100% CPU burn.

I rebuilt alpine from source and installed on the affected machine (so that glibc build/run versions match) and the problem appears to have gone away.

I suggest that the alpine package be rebuilt for karmic to cause glibc build vs. run versions to match.

Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10
