I have the same problem in Ubuntu 10.04, and had it already in 9.10.
Disabling effects (Appearance -> None) does not help.

$ apt-cache policy acroread
acroread:
  Installed: 9.3.2-lucid1
  Candidate: 9.3.2-lucid1
  Version table:
