Bug Description

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Samsung R439 Laptop. The keyboard works fine normally, but once I change the brightness by using the Fn+Cursor key combo, then the keyboard stops working.

If I press Fn+Up or Fn+Down just once, then the brightness keeps increasing or decreasing continuously and then nothing works. I am unable to type anything using the keyboard. Nothing on the panel works and the color changes upon hovering, but click action just doesnt work.

Basically other than moving around the mouse cursor and scrolling up and down the currently open window, nothing else works. The only way out is to press the power button and reboot the system. No other window or menu opens up.

I can provide any logs or any extra details that you might want.

Thanks,
Prashanth

@Fabio,

  Sure, just did that, but I don't know if the bug report is being attached properly. I did get a send report popup, but I don't know what happened after that. I will do the same thing again reproducing the erratic behaviour and I hope another report will go through, though if the system becomes unresponsive, I don't know how I will attach it.

Best.
Prashanth

The second set of reports have been uploaded while the problem was being reproduced. As you see, the system itself works fine i.e. all processing continues to happen and only the keyboard freezes up. Even the screen, as it is, updates correctly. Its like the Fn key, or the key combo is continuously being pressed and hence no other keys works.

More info as I can reproduce this bug. Workarounds on adjusting brightness via writing values to /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness works though.

 * Try to suspend/hibernate and then restart the system and attach /var/log/kern.log.0
 * Tarball of /proc/acpi directory. You can't just tar all files because their content sometimes changes etc.
    * cp -r /proc/acpi /tmp
    * tar -cvjf ~/acpi.tar.bz /tmp/acpi
    * attach acpi.tar.bz from your home directory
