When first waking up from sleeping, master volume is at maximum level

Let me revise that: the master volume is at maximum whenever the laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad R61i) wakes up from sleeping. Usually when booting up or logging in, the sound is muted.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd'.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy xfce4-mixer' or by checking in Synaptic.

$ lsb_release -rd

$ apt-cache policy xfce4-mixer

Thank you for the additional information. Can you tell us if this was a new installation of Xubuntu 10.04 or an upgrade from xubuntu 9.10 or 8.04?

It was originally an upgrade, but I had to re-install from scratch. Same
problem.
