Bug Description

I have recently purchased a new Asus M2V motherboard (socket AM2) and a new socket AM2 Athlon64 X2 4200+. I have been disapointed to find that the "sata_via" kernel module in Dapper does not recognise the included VT8237A southbridge and as such it can not see my SATA hard disk. My old motherboard featured the first revision of this chipset, VT8237, which worked perfectly in Dapper. I briefly tried Edgy and found that the sata_via driver detects the SATA drive fine, but it is not practical to run Edgy as it is still very early in development and too buggy. It would be useful if support for the VT8237A southbridges SATA controller could be backported to Dapper Drake, otherwise a lot of people with new machines will be totally unable to use Ubuntu until October when Edgy is released.

This is occuring to me as well. My brand new desktop is a very big paperweight. The patching regime required to get it working seems rediculous, yet the patch itself is minor to the OS (as far as I can tell).

My particular problem appears to be repaired by the new Ubuntu 6.06.1. I was able to install the SATA 2 drive without problems by using the 6.06.1 cd installer.

I have now confirmed that Ubuntu 6.06.1 adds support for the VT8237A southbridge, as I can now use my SATA drivers without any issues, so its all fixed now :)
