Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Platform: PowerPC
Distro: Ubuntu 8.04
Totem:2.22.1

Using Youtube plugin for totem should play flash video from YouTube

I had the YouTube plugin working fine. I didn't use it for about 1 week and in the meantime did a standard update as requested by the update manager. these are the packages I updated 5 days ago:
Upgraded the following packages:
gstreamer0.10-tools (0.10.18-4ubuntu1) to 0.10.18-4ubuntu2
helix-player (1.0.1-1) to 1.0.9-0ubuntu5
libexif-dev (0.6.16-2.1) to 0.6.16-2.1ubuntu0.1
libexif12 (0.6.16-2.1) to 0.6.16-2.1ubuntu0.1
libgstreamer0.10-0 (0.10.18-4ubuntu1) to 0.10.18-4ubuntu2
libgstreamer0.10-dev (0.10.18-4ubuntu1) to 0.10.18-4ubuntu2
tzdata (2008g-0ubuntu0.8.04) to 2008h-0ubuntu0.8.04
tzdata-java (2008g-0ubuntu0.8.04) to 2008h-0ubuntu0.8.04

Now when I try to play a YouTube video in totem I get the error:
"An error occurred... ffdemux_swf: Element doesn't implement handling of this stream. Please file bug."

I have searched the bugs and found several on this issue. I tried this fix:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/191760
that edits the /usr/lib/totem/plugins/youtube/youtube.py file but there was no effect.

I find that swfdec and gnash no longer play swf either and this happens with:
gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=http://www.allabout-sp.net/ep.swf?url=http://content.movies.myspace.com/0017703/38/48/1770318483.flv
Setting pipeline to PAUSED ...
Pipeline is PREROLLING ...
ERROR: from element /playbin0/decodebin0/ffdemux_swf0: Element doesn't implement handling of this stream. Please file a bug.
Additional debug info:
gstffmpegdemux.c(1372): gst_ffmpegdemux_sink_activate_push (): /playbin0/decodebin0/ffdemux_swf0:
failed to activate sinkpad in pull mode, push mode not implemented yet
ERROR: pipeline doesn't want to preroll.
Setting pipeline to NULL ...
** Message: don't know how to handle application/x-shockwave-flash

something broke and I can't figure it out.

thanks

that's not a totem issue if other software have the same bug

I can confirm that Totem no longer plays youtube videos. It occurred on my two Ubuntu-PCs after using the update-manager some days ago. Downgrading the upgraded 'gstreamer0.10-tools' and 'libgstreamer0.10-0' to their previous versions didn't solve anything.

I attached the stdout of Totem and a list of all changed packets since it had worked.

thanks

I also tried downgrading to no avail. I then upgraded those packages and no help.
It seems that both Dan and I upgraded the exact same packages on the same day:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 140924 2008-10-20 13:16 tzdata-java_2008h-0ubuntu0.8.04_all.deb

perhaps this is due to a gstreamer problem but perhaps also specific to doing an update? I wonder if the plugin works in Intrepid?

I have solved this problem by upgrading to 8.10. (Saw that error one time again, but i can't reproduce it)

Hope yours will work, too.

I'm a new user of Ubuntu 9.04 and have suddenly lost ability to view Youtube or ANY video.Worked fine until the updates of a few days ago(about July 22 or 23)(there were several) and now nothing.I went to the Synaptic Package Manager and it shows that flash plugins are enabled.Tried to install Adobe Flash Player again but system won't recognize.Any thoughts on how I can get this feature back or identify and correct the update that caused the problem?Need step by step, as I'm not very proficient.Thanks.John

@johnseddon: Please state if your bug affects viewing videos in Totem (and other video-programs) OR only affects viewing online-flash-videos (in your browser e.g. Firefox)

Flash-Plugins shouldn't affect your ability to view Youtube-videos in Totem.

I may not help much, since I don't use 9.04 anymore.

Dear John,

in that case this bug doesn't fit to your problem since it's about a mediaplayer called Totem and not about the Flash-Player. You should search another bugreport which fits to your problem.
