Clipboard is wiped after application closes

Bug Description

I use the K Desktop Environment 4.0.98, Kubuntu 8.04.1 Hardy Heron, Linux 2.6.24-19-generic, i686 architecture.

The clipboard is wiped after the application from which the text was copied is closed.

For example, if I open up KWrite and copy some text in order to paste it into Firefox or Konsole, I must remember to keep KWrite open until after I've pasted the text, otherwise my Ctrl + V or middle-click will be fruitless.

This happens whether the window from which I copy the text is root or user.

To check it isn't a KDE problem, I've just started a Fluxbox session and tried to copy from gedit to xterm. Same behaviour.

By way of comparison, I've just booted into Windows XP and Puppy Linux. They don't exhibit this bug.

I'm not sure what package this bug belongs to. I imagine it's something to do with Xorg.

I can confirm this bug in kde4.1 on kubuntu 8.04 using ppa packages, if the app is closed the copy buffer is lost. However if klipper is enabled, it is possible to copy paste from a buffer after closing an application, I am also unsure which package to file this bug against, in my own instance kdebase would seem the correct choice. But David can see this in fluxbox too so it is more likely some x component.

I was also getting a text-deletion problem, but only with Qt4 apps. I reported it to KDE (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167982), and then realised that it was caused by a problem with scim-bridge.

When I reconfigured scim-bridge, both problems disappeared. I've also upgraded to KDE 4.1 and Linux 2.6.24-20 since then.
