Bug Description

Please release nvidia packages with kernel modules compiled with gcc 4.2 (or whatever is required for kernel 2.6.24) for the amd64 arch

Yesterday I installed some fonts with

sudo aptitude install ttf-gentium ttf-dustin ttf-georgewilliams ttf-sjfonts sun-java6-fonts ttf-larabie-deco ttf-larabie-straight ttf-larabie-uncommon

I also installed an update for my system which was delivered via the update manager. I'm not sure what it was or how to check. It was some kind of library package.

Today I could not log into X. sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg fixes it . sudo nvidia-xconfig breaks it again.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description does not yet have enough information.

Please include the following additional information:

1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments
4. Please run the command "dpkg -l "linux*2.6.24*" | grep ^ii > dpkg-l.log" and attach the resulting file "dpkg-l.log" to this bug report

ok I attached the output of dmesg. It is rather messy on this machine. I have another x86_64 machine which needs the same package I can get you a cleaner dmesg from if you need it, but I only have access to that computer on weekends.

I want to point out that when I remove the nvidia-glx-new package and run nvidia's proprietary installation it works with that xorg.conf file. I know it goes through a step where it builds the kernel module. If you want me to upload the kernel modules it built to check them out against the ones in the package I can.

From the last comment the package linux-restricted-modules doesn't seem to be installed.
Please check if linux-restricted-modules package for your kernel is installed and install it if it isn't.

If it still doesn't work, then switch to a console and run the commands :
sudo depmod -a
then
sudo modprobe nvidia
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
or reboot

I do not know which package to install from Synaptic Pkg Mgr.

Is it one of the proprietary ones such as 173, or is it the open source driver?
