Bug Description

This bug actually consits of two parts:

On the one side it is quite hard to just donate small amounts of money. I like Ubuntu. I use it every day. I want to donate! But how? Finally there is a donate option at the download page, but it still is too hidden. Searching for "donate" on the webpage (ubuntu.com) brings up nothing. There could a big "donate" button on the front page. There could be a flattr (http://flattr.com) button which allows lots of users to just give some cents. Now you can at least start a new download (which I did not need) in order to donate. Asking users for money is ok I think, I use their effort "for free". I want to pay as long as I can afford it.

Which brings me to part II of the issue. In our small little company we have here, we have dozens of virtual ubuntu instances. All could be manged by landscape, could buy some support. We would pay for that. The problem is only the pricing. Paying 100 USD for a workstation and 320 USD for a server is way to much for a company like ours. So we end up doing it ourselves. Which actually is lot cheaper. The problem here is, that Ubuntu gets nothing.

I think it is a good start to let users select to topic (by using the donation sliders) they spend their money on. This has to be improved and extended. Let users vote by donation money. Let them put up bounties in launchpad for fixing bugs. There are so many ways ...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1065878/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

This has been partially implemented this week, you can see it when you are trying to download Ubuntu from ubuntu.com [1].
Does this solve the issue for you? If yes, we can mark this as fixed, otherwise please provide your suggestions for the current donation site.

As of April 10th you can now contribute money without starting a download, by visiting the contribution page without any download parameters:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/contribute/

This is still a partial fix, as the contribute page still sits within the download section, and we're still not promoting it anywhere as it is not the complete solution we'd like.

We will be having a further discussion about how and where to put a dedicated contribution page on the site.
