Bug Description

While running disk stress-ng the system tends to hang. I had to skip the tests to complete the certification run. This is where the test hangs

Disk Stress-ng does not have any issue on the normal Jammy 5.15 kernel. I have seen the behavior on a few servers.

I'd like to try and reproduce this bug. Are there any specific parameters you pass to kick off the disk stress-ng test?

To reproduce, I would install the certification test suite:
sudo apt-get install canonical-certification-server

Then what is the command line invocation you use for stress-ng?

I have one additional request. I just create the version -1029 of the realtime kernel, which has the latest upstream rt patches. This kernel can be downloaded from:

It may be also useful to add the --klog-check option to stress-ng and re-run the stressors manually as this will pickup the kernel log messages during the run and dump them to the output of stress-ng, then one can see which stressor has triggered the issue.

Hey, Colin! Do you know the option to pass to stress_ng that will trigger the 'test-storage' or disk specific tests? I ran 'stress-ng -h', but I didn't see anything disk specific.

Maybe I need to run the entire canonical-certification-server suite to trigger this.

I found how to get the certification packages. I performed the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hardware-certification/public
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install canonical-certification-server

However, I get a message that the suite is now deprecated:
canonical-certification-server
DEPRECATED: /usr/bin/canonical-certification-server

*** ATTENTION! ***
This command is deprecated and no longer functions
For certification testing, you should now use the version specific
commands that initiate certification runs.

certify-18.04: launches the 18.04 certification suite
certify-16.04: launches the 16.04 certification suite

Additionally there are other commands for running the smaller test
plans for targeted testing of Network, Storage, USB, and other
areas.

Hi Joseph,

Yes the certify-18.04 and certify-16.04 commands have been deprecated. If you want to run the full certification on a 22.04 system use
certify-22.04

If you just want to run the storage tests then use
test-storage

If you would like to run our stress-ng script

cd /usr/lib/checkbox-provider-base/bin/
sudo stress_ng_test.py disk --device sdb --base-time 240

Change sdb to your target device

All three options will run the stress-ng test case.

Also, I this could be hardware specific. Do you have other hardware to run the certification test on, to see if the bug is happening there as well?

For the system that currently exhibits the bug, can you run the following to gather more detailed info:

apport-collect 1998536
or to a file:

If apport can't be run:

I was not able to reproduce this bug by running the individual tests suggested in comments #11 and #13. However, it seems I can reproduce the hang by running the full test-storage test suite, by running: 'test-storage' and keeping all menu options enabled.

It appears some type of deadlock is happening in the kernel, since my existing terminals still accept a carriage return, but then lock up if I run a command such as top. Here is the output I see from the test when the hang happens:

This bug also happens with the v6.1-rc7 kernel and the rt5 real-time patch. I also confirmed the bug/system hang does not happen with just v6.1-rc7 without the real-time patch applied.

I will bisect through the rt patches to see if I can find the specific patch(s) that causes the bug. I will use the v5.15 kernel and it's rt patches, since v5.15 has the patches broken out individually, and they can be applied one at a time with 'git am'.

I've been bisecting this bug down. It appears the bug has existed back to v5.15-rc3-rt5. I'll test older versions, but it may be that this bug has always existed with PREEMPT_RT enabled.

The bisect has not provided much more detail. This issue does not appear to be a regression and appears to have always existed.

I was able to get additional debug info and a call trace by enabling CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT, CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING and CONFIG_JBD2_DEBUG. It also shows a circular locking issue. I will analyze this data for the next steps. I'll post the logs in the next comments.

One way to debug RT Ubuntu kernels is to start with the stable kernel and apply the RT patches (e.g. a non-Ubuntu kernel) and build with the ubuntu config. Then see if the bug occurs. If it does not, then it must be some addition extra in the Ubuntu kernel that is causing the issue (e.g. Apparmor, etc).

In the past when working on the Ubuntu RT kernels I found that the stable kernel + RT patches work well and only when the Ubuntu config and/or ubuntu extras are added we get RT kernel issues.

I stepped back from the bisect/debugging and looked at the higher level stats. The stress-ng test is started with one process for each core, and there are 96 of them. I looked at top[3] during a hang, and many of the stress-ng processes are running 'R'. However, a sysrq-q[2] also shows many stress-ng processes are 'D' in uninterruptible sleep. What also sticks out to me is all the stress-ng processes are running as root with a priority of 20. Looking back at one of the call traces[1], I see jbd2 stuck in an uninterruptible state:

The jdb2 kernel thread also running with a priority of 20[4]. When the hang happens, jbd2 is also stuck in an uninterruptible state(As well as systemd-journal):

I am pinning all of the stress-ng threads to cores 1-95 and the kernel threads to a housekeeping cpu, 0.

Output from cmdline:

However, even with this pinning, stress-ng ends up running on cpu 0, per the ps output[4]. This appears to be causing a dead-lock between jdb2 and the stress-ng processes, since they share the same priority/niceness.

To confirm this idea, I started test-storage / stress-ng so they had a lower priority than jbd2. I used the following:
sudo nice -10 test-storage

This causes jbd2 to continue to run with a priority of 20, but all the stress-ng threads are run with a priority of 30:

By adding 'nice -10' the test will complete without hanging. It appears the system hang was it waiting to complete I/O, which would never happen since the jdb2 threads cannot preempt stress-ng and causes a dead-lock.

Michael, could you also try running with the following command to confirm the results:
sudo nice -10 test-storage

If this resolves the bug, there are several options:
1. Run the cert suite with a nice value for real-time tests.
2. Change the tests so they do not run as root.
3. Tune the real-time system so stress-ng threads are pinned to isolated cores and and kernel threads are on a housekeeping only core.

I'm going to investigate option 3. I am assigning cores 1-95 as the isolated cores, so stress-ng should not run on core 0, but it is. I'm going to figure out why this is happening.

I read that stress-ng has a taskset option: --taskset list.

Is there a way to pass options like this to the certification tests, like test-storage? Of is there a way to edit the code within the certification suite to set options for stress-ng?
