Bug Description

After upgrading from 14.04 -16.04 Ubuntu GNOME, the lock screen will be broken with an "Authenticating" message.

This is due to gnome-shell loosing the authentication channel to gdm, after the upgrade. I am not sure that there is anyway to work around this and restore it without rebooting.

I have included a workaround for this on the patch attached to Bug 1565178.

There I have added a gnome-session inhibitor to block the screensaver, on Ubuntu GNOME we will leave this running do if the user exits the installer (rather than press restart button). They will have no screen lock until the next reboot, seems somewhat better than a locked screen to can't be unlocked.

Bad bug number? It refers to this very bug, which has no patches attached.

FWIW I managed to forget that locking the screen triggers this bug and locked myself out in the middle of an upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04. Oops. Screensaver inhibition doesn't prevent the user from hitting the Lock Screen key manually. :/

bad wording, I left the inhibitor in place to workaround this bug. The
other bug was the screensaver not being inhibited.

and I really don't think it ever should, ideally we would find a way to
maintain the auth channel, but there is a reason fedora force restarts
on upgrades, its a really hard problem ;(
