Wireless on EeePC 1000HE only connects at 1MB/s

The new Asus 1000HE model use a Wireless N network adapter which is recognized with the ath9k driver, but unfortunately it will only connect at 1MB/s. I read somewhere that newer versions of the Kernel support the card better and can achieve wireless N speeds, but all my attempts set the rate of wireless to anything above 1MB have resulted in no change. Unfortunately the NDIS Wrapper of the windows driver doesn't seem to work.
