Bug Description

While installing packages with synatpic the confirmation dialogs and "Applying changes" dialogs steal focus from other applications. This is bad for usability. Synaptic should flash in the windows list applet instead.

Synaptic does not only steal focus... it will actually switch the user from one workspace to another!

I think this is a relatively new development. I don't remember this happening when I first started using the system a few months ago. It only started since about 1 month or so.

Exactly the same here (also goes for the Add/Remove software dialog). This is the first time I noticed, so I also reckon it is new behaviour. So just to chime in, and stress the need to fix this. There's quite some windows or dialog boxes when upgrading or installing software, and now I have to refocus my applications at least three times.

This also happens with the Update Manager I'm not sue if there is a connection. Especially if as noted above Add/Remove software also does this.
I'm thinking a regression too

Anyway it would be nice to have it fixed.

this is the most annoying bug ever.

I'm trying to convince a friend that linux is a more peaceful environment than windows, where user have a better control over your desktop when suddenly synaptic steal my focus.

it's not only annoying but dangerous, i can press enter or spacebar over the synaptic window and agree with something without even know what.

unacceptable that bug stands for sooo long time.

more info would be best as to whether at least what version of ubuntu this happens, in. Does in happen to u in Gutsy, Feisty, ??

I'm uisng Gutsy and I have no such problem with Synaptic - altho i did file a bug report earlier on something, focus is fine on my end - via a full install of Gutsy.

Sorry,

This is in Gutsy fresh install. I just checked it and the problem exists. It is the 'installing' dialog that grabs focus

Xubuntu 8.04 with Synaptic 0.61ubuntu9. The window that pops up and installs a package that has just been downloaded steals the focus--this is quite useless really as this window doesn't need any interaction. Other windows may steal the focus as well and I wouldn't know, I've switched to Ubuntu only one week ago.

Could this be filed as a papercut?

As of today this still happens. Running debian sid, KDE 4.3.2, synaptic 0.62.5.
For KDE4 users, this can be partially fixed by setting the focus stealing prevention to high or extreme. In system settings > window behavior
