Bug Description

I own a PC-Chips M811LU motherboard, at least to what I remember. My problem is the hibernate does not work to anything that I tried on the forums.

1. I hit hibernate pc seems to be saving to the drive Pc turns off.

2. I hit the power button on the tower again. Pc turns on, shows the bios screen, proceeds to do something. The screen remains black and the monitor led remains green for a few seconds.

3. Monitors power button turns from green to orange and blinks (as if went to sleep).

4. Computer continues to run but any button or mouse move does not wake it up.

5. I hit hard reset to reboot pc without hibernate.

My graphic card is a Nvidia fx 5200 running the 3d driver.

I'm not sure what else I can provide other then it is not working correctly. Let me know and i'll upload it here for you.

I tried on all recent releases of ubuntu even the current one running intrepid-ibex. Same with opensuse 10.x and 11.x.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thank you for the update I just came home late. Tomorrow I'll be celebrating my mothers Birthday. I will perform most likely the precompiled binary on the alpha5.

"1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test."

I can but I rather avoid it (right now) to make things easier (thankfully) the harder work was already done.

After the test over the weekend i'll let you know right away.

I couldn't resist and insstead of installing a full new CD. I simply upgraded the sources and hibernate does now work. I opened some programs that I wanted to "save state."
For now the bug is solved way to go ubuntu team! I'm going to change the status to solved. If anyone else is having an issue feel free to change to "reopened." I'll happily test anything that might be added.

But as a side note, when I get a chance. I will open a new bug I think on nvidia driver i'm not sure yet.

I'm not sure why but after few days the bug has returned. I did update from apt-get all the latest changes. Perhaps enabling "nvidia" 3rd party caused the regression. Just letting everyone know, the bug has again reared its ugly head.

Seems after renabling nvidia 3d driver causes it. Disabling the 3D driver makes hibernate work again. But without "3d" modeling is more complicated for 3D. Any possible fixes ? Thanks.

Can someone tell me if this will be fixed? It is a big hurdle esp since nvidia is closed source. Can someone update me what is happening?

Thank You

I fixed the problem, however the credits are not due to me. Although my pc is not a laptop the problem is the same. It is as a result of corruption see: [http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/appendix-q.htm]l

 Instructions From: [https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaLaptopBinaryDriverSuspend ]

Details on the problem from Nvidia:
"sometimes chipsets lose their AGP configuration during suspend, and may cause corruption on the bus upon resume. The AGP driver is required to save and restore relevant register state on such systems; NVIDIA's NvAGP is notified of power management events and ensures its configuration is kept intact across suspend/resume cycles."

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

Mickey: Thank you for posting your results after your (probably) time consuming research.

This used to work flawlessly with nouveau and (apparently) never with the blob. I'm using your suggestion now.

For now, the nouveau drivers (apparently) suffers from the same issue. But only after I upgraded to a new userspace (not the kernel).
