Bug Description

Skype Notify is a hack. Better if Skype used libnotify, the standard way to display notifications.

Using libnotify, Skype notifications would match the look of the Desktop, would act in the manner intended by distributors like Ubuntu, and would be more customisable by the user.

The bug report against Skype is located at https://jira.skype.com/browse/SCL-502

There is an open source version of Skype for Linux being developed! :D
I feel confident we can get proper notifications included in the official client.

Happy days, see: http://share.skype.com/sites/linux/2009/11/skype_open_source.html

i don't feel so confident as yet.
Pidgin is able to talk to Skype via dbus API, i see a category "Skype" with its own indicators in the messaging menu and notify OSD shows bubbles on incoming messages, when i setup my Skype account in pidgin.

My contacts also appear on the buddy list.

Now we need this to work with "Contact List" and Telepathy/Folks, then we'll need a clever way of getting rid of the notification area icon on the long run.

Perhaps it would suffice to place a Skype button in the Unity launcher...
