Bug Description
Simple scan only supports 8 bit colour. Extra bits are discarded. It should retain this information so it can be saved as a 16 bit PNG.

Scanning in bitdepths >8 bit is definetly a 'pro'-feature
It produces large files and most applications can't work with.
As long as simple-scan stays 'simple' supporting more than >8 bit points in the wrong direction.
IMHO (and I pray every day that this will happen) Robert Ancel should (after collecting enough experiences with simple scan) rethink his decision for staying simple. Hopefully someday he decides to either develop 'advanced-scan' or (my personal favorite) to extend simple-scan with a dual-view simple/advanced (like most proprietary scanner- applications in the win/mac world). If this should happen, then, and only then, supporting >8 bit is a must.
I know there is xsane (unecessarily overcomplicated and totally ugly) and there are the kipiplugins/ skanlite (which requires KDE, nevertheless they are actually my favourite tool for scanning).
