after a fresh install under linux debian6 (64bit) and the create of the first user the MD5-Hashes failed again.

This is not actually a bug. The character before the '$' character are the salt value which may contain unprintable characters. However, to make editing .conf files easier I've committed a change that ensures only printable characters are used in new salt values.
