Overlay calendars can't be selected through web ui

Bug Description
Since the new schoolyear-based groups were implemented in 2008.10 the functionality to select groups and persons in the manage overlay web ui was removed.
This doesn't affect overlays created in prior versions. Users which were created after the upgrade to 2008.10 can't select any overlays (except resources).
This makes the basic functionality in our school (we use ST as our default calendaring application) virtually unusable.
