rubber fails to compile graphic file when \includegraphic is inside displaymath delimiters \[ ... \]

If \includegraphics{foo} macro is inside \[ ... \] on a single line, as in:

  \[ \includegraphics{foo} \]

the file foo is not compiled. On the other hand,

  \[
  \includegraphics{foo} \]

succeeds. This looks like a parser error, but I do not understand rubber's internals enough to propose a fix.
