Bug Description
We need a scalable way to develop and test translations. After lengthy discussions during our ISD team meeting we came up with a few action items. I've put the summary of notes taken from the team meeting below, hopefully we can come up with a project / set of requirements + timeline together in order to move this work forward.
Here's the summary from our team meeting:
Immediate Action: Separate Strings into 'Legal' and 'Community' files and release the Community based strings for translation by the community.
Challenges:
- No deadlines
- No way to verify if a translation is accurate before enabling
- Certain strings have a legal impact if they are not written correctly
so they are a higher priority to translate than others
- Some releases could be held back if translations are not completed on
high priority strings
- No ISD initiated community engagement of our translations process
Idea: Move Translations to the Community:
- LP does not cater to this need
- Perhaps use a different tool to do translations reviews
Idea: Find a way to set a threshold so that a minimum number of people
review a translation before it is released
- Make translations implement as merge proposals
Idea: Two pronged approach - Split the translation, one for legal, one
for community
- Split all legal strings into a file called 'Legal'
- Find a way to identify the strings differently between Legal, and
Community
- 3 Types of string - a) Restricted because Legal obligations (Pay for
instance), b) Closed source yet Community translatable, c) Open to
everyone including Community
Idea: Engage the community in our translations more
- we are trying to have weekly deployments, perhaps have some kind of
announce that shows which strings are yet untranslated
- LP shows the untranslated strings, and translators watch that
- If you have a blog on Ubuntu planet, use it to blog about tranlations
- Initially ping dpm and he can post the announcements
- Create a mailing-list to communicate out to our 'community'
- Send an e-mail on the translations list
