Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Hello all,

A strange behaviour of rhythmbox (version 0.11.5, german translation) occured on my laptop:

I select a few music files to edit their properties. Right-clicking on one file brings up a menu from which I select 'properties'. Using the 'back' and 'next' buttons I adjust artist, title, album etc.
So far things are working fine.

When I reach the end of the list of prior selected music files sometimes (rather seldom) the 'back' button turns to grey and becomes inactive. Strangely enough the 'next' button is still active even thought there is no next file in the selection.
While the 'back'-button in the properties menu is 'out of order' I have the close that menu and manually choose another music file from the selection. This occures to be rather strange to me. There could be something going on with the GUI of the file property menu.

If you need any further description or system output from my laptop please let me know. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on an IBM T40 laptop.

Kind regards, Tobias

Thank you for taking your time to file this bug and help making Ubuntu better. Are you sure that when you select multiple files and choose Properties from the right-click menu, you get the properties window with Back and Forward buttons? As far as I checked it happens only when you select a single file from the playlist and open its property. When multiple files are chosen, then the properly window displays only the common properties between them and not a Back and Forward buttons for sure.

Also, I couldn't reproduce your bug on Rhythmbox 0.11.5 on Hardy. Back gets disabled when the first file on the list is reached and Forward gets disabled when the last file on the list is reached.

Hello Parthan,

Sorry about my initial post. The description was rather sloppy for my part. I am going to try again. :)
By 'selecting multiple files' I meant normally browsing through the music collection, e.g. selecting the album Kind of Blue from the artist Miles Davis. The music files are then displayed in the playlist.

This is where the presumptive bug comes into play. After selecting one music file and editing its properties that file may move to the end of the playlist.
(You were right about the back and next buttons, Parthan. They only come up after selecting a single file.)
If a music file has moved to the end of the playlist the back button in the properties menu sometimes (though rather seldom) becomes inactive. This only happened after changing the name of the music file (e.g. to a new name starting with z) and only three or four times up until now. I don't know if reproducing this quirk is possible without too much effort.
This description might still sound weird. If this should happen again I will try to get a screenshot.

Here is a screenshot. The music file 'Blow your mind' moved from top to the bottom of the playlist (after been given the tracknumber 8). The back button ('zurück' in German) remains inactive.
I might be to fussy about this since it's just a detail in rythmbox. :)

I could reproduce the bug using the following procedure,

1. Open the playlist and order it with respect to the album title alphabetically.
2. Select the first song in the list (the top most) and add 'z' before the first letter (mine was adding 'z' in front of 'adada').
3. This doesn't move the file immediately to the last position. Now press the 'forward' button as if moving to the next song property. This moves the song to the end of the list, but the back button is inactive and forward button is active for the same song as though it is still in the first position.
4. Close the property window and open the property for the same song file again through right click menu > property.
5. Now remove the 'z' added in step 2, but this doesn't immediately move the song to the top of the list as it was originally.
6. Press the back button, which causes the song file to move to top of the list. But the property window still shows an active back button and inactive forward button as though last item on the list.

The bug is that although pressing back or forward button after making a change which will reorder the file position in the list is working properly, it is not able to take into consideration the current position of the file and activate/deactivate the back and forward buttons after the file has been moved through the list.

I have also attached screenshots taken at the end of step 3 and step 6 with this comment. I hereby confirm the bug as it is reproducible.

thanks for your report, this is not reproducible for me with rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20080807-0ubuntu1 in Intrepid, does anybody can reproduce it with it?

I can reproduce this on Hardy. I was trying to reproduce by pressing the "Close" button in Property dialog after changing the name. But one must press "Forward" button after changing the name and it is easily reproduced.

Is this still an issue when using a supported version of rhythmbox and Ubuntu?

Further to my comment #13 I can now confirm a slight variation of this bug with rhythmbox 3.4.2 in Ubuntu 18.04.

When the song is moved to the end of the list, the forward button should be disabled but it isn't. It seems there are other minor issues in respect of the currently highlighted file once another file is moved after the renaming.
