Tagging untagged documents is unnecessarily complicated

Bug Description

After importing some documents I like to tag them all at once. Normally I'd like to filter on "Untagged" and add any number of tags to each of those documents. Unfortunately after adding the first tag to each document it is removed from the view, since it is no longer untagged. Although this is the logical behaviour it makes filtering on "Untagged" rather useless to me, since I often want to add more than just one tag.

Would it be possible to keep documents in the view, even after a tag has been added? Maybe until the library is saved and/or the view is filtered again.

The solution to this is to update the document view when a tag is removed, but not when a tag is added.

I was thinking about this a bit, and I've come up with two elegant approaches that are nice and consistant across the whole application.

The first one is that when a document is selected, it's "pinned down" in a way. Until you select another document, it stays put no matter what you do. It could, however, turn grey if you remove it from the tag-group that it's currently in. Then as soon as you switch documents, it disappears (with maybe a fade-out so that the display doesn't confusingly shift as soon as you select another document, or if fadeouts are too hard, you could just leave a blank space where it used to be. I have a feeling that it's psychologically pleasing to see a blank space where the document used to be -- it gives the feeling of "cleaning up the space" when you make each document disappear from the "untagged" area one at a time. A feeling of progress! :)

Also, if you put next/prev buttons on the Tag-Selector that would be sweet. Oh, and if it could save the last-selected document when you switch to another view, that would be very handy. For example, going from Math to Physics and then back. (If you just wanted to see something quickly.)

Another method of tagging involves a little wizard window that's streamlined to do the tagging of a bunch of untagged documents. Basically, a tagging assembly line. :)

Something like this:

=== WWWIZARDD ==========================

Select tag(s):
   [ ] cats
   [ ] physics
   [ ] ...

   v-- documents
               v-- selected document
|---------|----------|----------|------------|
| | * * * | | |
| doc1 | * doc2 * | doc 3 | doc 4 |
| | * * * | | |
|---------|----------|----------|------------|
| art | cats | money | garlic |
| cooking | physics | sleep | zombies |
|---------|----------|----------|------------|

[ < [ ] > ]

                 ^- scrollbar

================================

(please excuse the crudness of this diagram..)

And a next button, so you don't have to scroll-right when it gets to the end. :)

That might be more work than you're willing to put in though.

Haha.. Why did it remove extra spaces from my post! :)

doc2 is supposed to be selected.

Also, the scenario here isn't too accurate.. this hypothetical user has gone and tagged all the documents and then gone back and picked doc2.. I just wanted to show that you could go back, but I might've gotten carried away. :)

I confirm that this bug is really annoying. Especially since the more tags and the more documents you have, the more difficult it becomes to find the document being edited.
From a usability point of view the application does not scale at all.

Can't you just tag all your untagged documents with, let's say, "new" and work on the documents filtered by that tag. When done, remove completely tag "new" - it'll be gone from all the documents.
I'm unsure whether this should be somehow automated (i.e. should all Untagged have the "new" tag)

As above people say, I feel the tag system can be improved. Some mp3 managers like "quodlibet" have nice solution on tag problems. I hope the way of tagging can learn from that.
