Reason for the backport:

Backporting new functionality. Library allows integration and/or development of applications to the UFP Identity service providing robust, strong, dynamic authentication.

I can provide technical assistance in terms of understanding how to configure a PAM module for testing. There is a test application in the original source. Credentials are required for using the service and can be provided.
Testing on precise, trusty and xenial has already been performed with ppa's and VM's
