Bug Description
In certain situations (being fuzzy on purpose), the state of the Engine switches to off without the user having requested the state change.

I'm marking higher-level components accessing service state, too. The service itself does not alter its own state, and the behavior is random enough to justify an investigation of values being initialized correctly.
