Bug Description

Pantheon-Files can sort directories and files by name, date and so on. But I miss a grouping function. You should be able to group your directories and files at least by date. Possible groups: today, yesterday, this week, this month, this year, long ago. That would be very usefull. If you have a download directory sorted by date (new things on top) and you're searching for something you downloaded and maybe extracted to a folder this day, you must scroll to the top and check directories on top and then scroll to the middle and check the files on top. With a group you can just check the group today on top of the folder.

You can check for example kde's dolphin file manager or windows explorer. Especially the grouping of windows explorer with its groups is very well done and for me the most missing feature.

I think that a right click context menu option "group" would be the right choice.

Thanks,
Johannes

I'm going to confirm as a wishlist because I think it could be really useful if done correctly. I've tagged "needs-design" since design team will need to figure out how this should look for:

1. sort alphabetically
2. sort by date
3. sort by size
4. sort by type
5. What happens when we only have 1 item in a bunch of groups (a.png b.png c.png d.png)
6. What happens when we have a lot of items in a single group (a.png ab.png ac.png ad.png ae.png)
