Bug Description

On all official karmic kernel series, the widely spread (Intel 945GCLF Mainboard) networking chipset RTL8101E/RTL8102E will not be recognized automatically. Neither do 8139too/cp nor r8169 recognize it.
The only solution so far is to download and compile Realtek´s r8102 driver [1] and compile it.

I plea for integration of this driver in this and upcoming linux-images in karmic and lucid. Accordning to the driver´s header files, the driver is GPLed/2+.
Alternative: integration of fixes in r8169.

Hi epek,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 534536

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Problem with driver still present in lucid.
Updated drivers available from realtek. (will replace 8169 current drivers).

There are still issues with this bug. I've had my Gateway LT3103u for quite some time now, and haven't noticed, because the wireless works fine. I didn't really think to check it, as usually wired ethernet there's no problem with. I can confirm having this bug. This should really be fixed.

Wired is basically a necessity, as some wireless drivers require additional software installation once Ubuntu is installed.

There is no activity on this bug as there is a workaround -- installing RealTek's drivers. But that doesn't seem ideal by any means.
