In fact, the stable specs do check out the stable branch in a post-collect script (as a work-around).

It looks like codetree will support collecting and checking out a git branch:

git://blah;revno=branchname

Example (slight misnomer there with the tag vs branch terminology):

Code appears to do a branch checkout:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~codetree-maintainers/codetree/trunk/view/head:/codetree/handlers/git.py#L83

Need to revisit this to see if it can be plumbed through mojo collect.
