From question https://answers.launchpad.net/onboard/+question/151643:

Why not provide a keyboard layout similar to the "Android" phones touchscreen keyboards?

Francesco, do you have a screenshot of the layout handy?
I'd like to have it docking too. Any idea if gnome3 natively supports dockable windows?

I filed this bug as a reminder to a question about onboard:

The fact is that I don't know how the Android layout looks like and works. But I assume that it is designed for phones with touchscreens and might be worth further investigation when there is some time...

It's really intuitive in the Android 3.0 release. Honestly, a dockable keyboard that slides in from the bottom when a text box is selected would make Unity really awesome. One of the biggest problems lately is that lenses in Unity do not permit software keyboards such as onboard to input to them. I'd suggest some collaboration with the Unity team.

I think it's better to separate the two issues of this bug report. The main point of the initial question was the creation of a new Android key layout. The issue with docking the keyboard to screen edges is older and keeps coming up more frequently. Let's handle it in bug #405034.

I recently installed ubuntu desktop on my nexus 7 which pretty much forced me to create a new layout somewhat similar to the android layout.
It's missing some things compared to the android keyboard but i don't really use them
Missing: Function keys(maybe add to , Printscreen, scroll lock, pause, mouse controls(changing cursor type and having onboard close itself and then being stuck became a tad annoying), num pad and a lot of symbols compared to the android version.

In the below album are screenshots from Android 4.2.2 (CM10.1) and some of what my version looks like

Attached are the layout files (extract into ~/.onboard/layouts/ )

Any ideas/criticisms are welcome =]
