Bug Description

Just finished installing Ubuntu Netbook remix 10.04 on hp pavillion DV2815nr. initially had screen resolution issues where the live cd and initial install for this laptop showed distorted image with horizontal lines across the screen at about 10 mm spacing each. but the image was still visible. After updating the drivers it looked fine. but the installation was scary (the format portion) since I couldn't see the setup portion clearly.

Now after completing the package updates the CPU randomly goes to 100% on one CPU and about 39 on second and keeps on alternating between processors. (AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-62 with 4 gb ram). Don't know what to do. Im new to Ubuntu and would like to make it the main OS. Nothing else is running at the time but the fan was revving at a high rpm. and the laptop and the battery were very hot. Have vista as second boot which only does that on high performance mode. The screen brightness is also much higher than normal.

Another issues is that when I go to change the OS boot order in menu.lst file it shows blank. Not sure how to address that.

Please help!
Baba.

Forgot to mention that the battery drains much faster due to this. and the only app that shows high cpu usage in system monitor is the Gnome system monitor about 10% usage. rest all shows zero. I do not understand this part as the cpu chart and fan and heat tells me that there is something else going on in the background. where as the processes show nothing.

I had the same issue on my older Sony notebook. The netbook remix 10.05 version had my CPU cranked most of the time and it made the UI very unresponsive. I since changed my Login Screen Settings to boot into the Desktop version and it's running fast and smooth. I even like the UI better. Give it a shot and see if you're happier with the Desktop version. Good luck.
