Icons overlay when switching between categories

Bug #349562 reported by BigTA
This bug affects 6 people
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
Ubuntu Netbook Remix Launcher
netbook-launcher (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

I've noticed that when I switch between categories from the Internet tab, the Internet icons remain in the main window and the icons for the new category appear on top. This also happens to the text below the icon making it difficult to determine which icon is which. This is an intemittent error and only happens occaisionally. I have yet to figure out what causes it.
If I logout and log in the problem is fixed.

Hmm, I added some code to fix this issue a couple of releases back. Could you please attach:

1. Your device make/model
2. The output of `apt-cache policy netbook-launcher`
3. The output of glxinfo

Changed in netbook-remix:
status: New → Triaged

I have this same bug, but the "sticky" menu is Accessories, and the icons are faded somewhat but still clickable; the icon spins as if it was the active menu.

I've attached a couple of screenshots plus glxinfo output and my Xorg log. The second is in false colour because the faded icons are hard to see.

Don't suppose it helps but I noticed this just after waking from hibernation.

My device is an Advent G10, which is really a rebadged MSI Wind.

Netbook Launcher is a desktop launcher that uses the clutter UI library.
It is commonly being used on netbook desktops with a resolution of
1024x600 pixels and also supposed to support usage on touchscreens.
It follows the xdg spec standards from freedesktop.org

Nothing new here. I've noticed the "ghost" images pile up on top of each other, so netbook-launcher quickly becomes unusable. My workaround when the bug happens is to temporarily go back to the normal Gnome desktop using the desktop switcher app. I can't recall its name OTTOMH.

This issue occurs frequently on many of the menus for me on my Fujitsu U810. When this happens the computer starts to slow down and if not immediately reset it tends to hang requiring me to resort to the SysRq key.

Hi, this was an issue with the Intel graphics drivers in Jaunty afaict. Has anyone here tested to see if this happens on Karmic?

Andrew Meadows (andrew-meadows) wrote :

Not with Karmic but I updated my intel drivers from the X Updates PPA and my kernel to 2.6.30. This fixes several other slowdowns and graphical glitches I had. On this bug it significantly reduced the frequency of occurrence. However, if the machine is under a heavier load and I use the menu I still run the risk of setting this bug off and having to reboot.

I haven't been able to reproduce this with Karmic.

There were two bugs here:

1. The old launcher didn't always free the old iconviews, hence they stuck around. This was fixed in the Jaunty cycle

2. The intel video drivers have a bug in which this issue occurs. This seems to have been fixed in the most current release of these drivers, and partly in those available for Jaunty in the xorg-edgers PPA.

As 1. is fixed and 2. is an issue with video drivers rather than the launcher, I'd like to mark this bug as fix-released in netbook-remix-launcher project. Unless someone can reproduce this in Karmic on nvdia or ATI.

I do not believe that this is a duplicate of bug 435805 because the behavior seems different. It is possible that they are related, but until we can truely identify the problem in either report, I can't say that this is a duplicate.
