You should look at the digital audio player support in banshee. Its in c#, but I'm sure it has some wisdom that can be gleened from the source.

There is an effort by Graham Binns to add python bindings to libmtp. This would enable all creative mp3 players as well as countless other MTP enabled devices for Listen. Might be nice no? Check is webpage:

I have a Cowon Iaudio U3, acting as UMS,it is of course accessible by the filesystem menu in the middle panel but it would be good if it loads automatically perhaps under the filesystem icon. It does so in rythmbox, perhaps there is some code to grab...
