Startup/boot freezes after Grub menu

Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

After the Grub menu selection I get a terminal screen with the following information:

Boot from (hd0, 4) ext4 18ebd363-befe-43fb-...
Starting up...

And this freezes booting for about 1-2 minutes! After that time the Ubuntu loading screen appears and startup proceeds normally.

This never happened in previous Ubuntu versions.

Freezing at boot with SiS 182/965 chipset Edit (40.5 KiB, text/plain)

I do have the same problem, and also with the same chipset:

Using Jaunty 9.04
Kernel Linux 2.6.28-12-generic
Chipset: SiS 182/965 (same as brunolabs)

I thouhgt it was my tvtunner at the beginning, but looking at the dmesg I saw it was a problem with the SATA devices:

Confirmed on both Ubuntu 9.04 (2.6.28-14) and openSUSE 11.1 (2.6.27.7-9). This is a kernel issue.

Was working fine on 8.10, and previous versions.

This is not a usplash issue in any way, but rather a Linux kernel issue.

Works correctly with a Live USB Ubuntu 8.04

motherboard: ASUS P5E
Hard drives: 2*160 SATA RAID, SATA 1To and SATA2 500 Go
All impacted by this feature ...but not all time

I have just started having this issue after I upgraded to a new motherboard and CPU: M4A79XTD EVO with a Phenom II 965. I am running 9.10 kernel.

After troubleshooting I found out my issue was related to there being old fakeraid metadata for an nvidia chipset being picked up by dmraid even after I had created an array on the M4A79XTD EVO. Running "dmraid -rE" removed the metadata but I had to copy the data back on from my backups. This seemed to resolve the startup delay on my configuration.
