Aurélien Leblond, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please comment on whether this problem did not happen on a Ubuntu release prior to Precise?

As well, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested and remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text:
needs-upstream-testing

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hello,

I have this soundcard/laptop only since Oneiric, and the bug was already happening there.
I am now running Quantal Alpha 3 and can still reproduce the bug.

I now tested the bug on:
tested on:
- 3.5.0-7-generic
- 3.6.0-030600rc1-generic

And can reproduce in all cases.

Aurélien Leblond, thank you for testing Lucid. Hence, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. However, the USB maintainer(s) have made it crystal clear they want none to file USB reports on bugzilla.kernel.org.

Instead, could you please report this problem through the appropriate channel by following the instructions _verbatim_ at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel#KernelTeam.2BAC8-KernelTeamBugPolicies.Overview_on_Reporting_Bugs_Upstream ?

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Christopher,

I will not need a backport to a release prior to Saucy (I'm compiling and running the kernel 3.9.5).

I don't think the status should be changed to Invalid but to Fixed, as their is a specific fix in the kernel 3.9.5 for this issue.

Here is a copy/paste from the 3.9.5 log:

commit 3251317e8f0b705ca4999e4f272eb13ec5dcd6c4

USB: xHCI: override bogus bulk wMaxPacketSize values

    commit e4f47e3675e6f1f40906b785b934ce963e9f2eb3 upstream.

This patch shortens the logic in xhci_endpoint_init() by moving common
calculations involving max_packet and max_burst outside the switch
statement, rather than repeating the same code in multiple
case-specific statements. It also replaces two usages of max_packet
which were clearly intended to be max_burst all along.

More importantly, it compensates for a common bug in high-speed bulk
endpoint descriptors. In many devices there is a bulk endpoint having
a wMaxPacketSize value smaller than 512, which is forbidden by the USB
spec. Some xHCI controllers can't handle this and refuse to accept
the endpoint. This patch changes the max_packet value to 512, which
allows the controller to use the endpoint properly.

In practice the bogus maxpacket size doesn't matter, because none of
the transfers sent via these endpoints are longer than the maxpacket
    value anyway.

Marking Fix Released as it appears the Saucy kernel has incorporated known good upstream commit e4f47e3675e6f1f40906b785b934ce963e9f2eb3 as per http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-saucy.git;a=shortlog;pg=3 .

Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Fix Released
