Bug Description

Here's an example. This ticket on launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cryptopp/+bug/915018 has a link to this ticket on Red Hat Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=773443 . The latter has been closed (NOTABUG).

(See https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/931552 for the issue about launchpad not automatically detecting this and updating its database accordingly.)

The issue is that I can't manually set launchpad's knowledge of that Red Hat Bugzilla bug to show that the latter is closed without choosing "None, the status of the bug is updated manually.". I would rather leave the "remote watch" set to "Red Hat Bugzilla #773443", so that (a) there is a hyperlink to it in an unambiguous, machine-parseable place, and (b) if https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/931552 were to get fixed then https://bugs.launchpad.net/cryptopp/+bug/915018 would be auto-updated.

So I would like to either have the remote watch set to Red Hat Bugzilla but be able to override the setting to set it to "closed", or I would like to be able to set the remote watch to "None" but put a link to Red Hat Bugzilla in an unambiguous, machine-parseable place. I guess separating the linkage from the remote-watch functionality to some degree.

The former sounds better.

Proposal 1: humans can override the settings on Remote Watch things, and if they do then the Remote Watch stops overwriting whatever they touched (whatever the human touches gets a magic "robots can't change this" flag, I guess).

Proposal 2: if the remote watch is broken/disabled, as the Red Hat Bugzilla currently is, then humans can edit the settings just as if there wasn't a remote watch.

Proposal 2 sounds easier to me and it makes sense. If the remote watch is disabled, might as well treat it as non-existence with regard to whether humans can edit the values.

lifeless mentioned on IRC that launchpad would detect hyperlinks to bug trackers added as comments. I decided to try that out by setting the Red Hat Bugzilla entry on https://bugs.launchpad.net/fedora/+bug/915018 to "No Remote Watch -- manual", setting the Status to "invalid" (which is the correct final status of the Fedora issue as per Red Hat Bugzilla), and then mentioning the link to it in a comment:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/fedora/+bug/915018/comments/13

So far, launchpad hasn't updated the "Fedora" row in the table of "Affects" projects and distros.

As you've observed in Bug #931552, the Red Hat Bugzilla's syncing is disabled (in fact it's broken, which is why we disabled it). So there will be no automatic update of that row. You can still do it manually by expanding the Fedora row in the bug tasks table for that bug.

Graham: thank you for responding to my bug report, but your reply does not address my problem. As I said, in my original bug report, the fact that Red Hat Bugzilla's syncing is disabled is a different issue, namely this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/931552 . The issue that I'm having in this ticket could be fixed with or without fixing syncing.

I don't like it when people say "Re-read what I wrote", because it sounds very rude to me. However, I did spend a lot of time explaining the issue in my initial report, and it sounds like you might have misunderstood which problem I was having, so if you could please review what I wrote initially I would appreciate it.
