Bug Description

It would be great to have a button in answer tracker to thank a person making a comment, indicating the comment was helpful. Currently, only the OP can do that.

I'm going to claim this for adding the +1 button.

iirc Launchpad's product manager (jml? mrevell?) said previously that we ought to add social "thanks" features by building on an existing site, rather than reinventing it, so I'm doing that with g+.

Please no! I've stayed away from the data gatherers and did so for a reason. Don't tell me a simple counter coupled with a button is programmatically too challenging to keep in-house?

Rolf, if you're going to be sarcastic why not write it yourself?

Yes, we could do an upvote and counter within Launchpad. It has some
pros (keeps data within Launchpad) and disadvantages (doesn't
encourage broader sharing of activity here.)

A "simple counter" is probably not plausibly enough, unless we want votes to be irrevocable, which is probably not ok.

Probably what we would want is a table of "$person thanked $object" which could be linked through to the author of that object. It could appear in timelines, when we get them, which would be nice, and something we cannot do with an external service. It probably would be something that ought to live in an external microservice rather than in the webapp itself, for the sake of performance. Eventually it could give a better measure of standing than karma carefully does, though that needs care not to be abusable.

It's not trivial. It does avoid privacy problems of using an external service and it does ultimately allow more powerful integration in Launchpad, and people who want to share links to lp by G+ or whatever other method can still do so.

Martin, why so defensive? I reported this ticket but I'm not allowed to comment on a solution put forth? I also don't think "write it yourself" is in order here. I've been doing a fair share of work in Ubuntu, Debian and other FOSS projects for years, but unlike you I'm not receiving a single dime for it. Maybe that's something you also want to keep in mind.

But that's really besides the point. The point is to find a good solution, and frankly, Google+ or FB or whatever simply ain't it. The current situation is that the "Answer X solved it for me"-button is irrevocable as far as I can see. And I think that's fine. I f you have ideas for a more flexible solution, more power to ya! You already wrote down a few of your thoughts in #6, that's good to see. I only see a problem if the more powerful solution becomes so complex so as to delay local implementation of something more basic. FWIW, I'd be fine with non-revocable.

Alright, I'll shut up now and let you do your work. Thank you.

Hi Rolf,

I appreciate your feedback, your "can it be too challenging" just
rubbed me the wrong way. I suppose you've had people say that about
your work too.

... because of privacy/tracking issues?

So, basically you're asking for a way for people beyond the original
questioner to say thanks for the answer?

I'm going to unassign this based on the plusone experiment being discarded.

There is some discussion in <https://lists.launchpad.net/launchpad-dev/msg08536.html> looks like a promising way to have another go at it later.
