Hello Martin Pool,
Jonathan Lange (jml) added you as a member of xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
If you would like to subscribe to the team list, use the link below
to update your Mailing List Subscription preferences.

On visiting that page, it looks like I am already subscribed to the list. So maybe the mail template is just incorrect? Or maybe I really wasn't subscribed yet? I don't know.

The email does not know about your personal settings. The email is stating two things,
1) that there is a mailing list, and
2) that there you cna change you subscriptions
Even if you are automatically subscribed, you may choose to not subscribe to this team's list.
nb. I think this whole scenario is crack, I think all team members should always be subscribed to the list, users can leave teams if they do not want the emails. This also means communication teams should not be used in ACLs, but this has always been true.
