502 Bad Gateway when trying to check out a bzr branch

Bug Description

Today when running this command:

C:\Program Files\Bazaar\bzr.EXE checkout http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~exarkun/pyopenssl/pkcs12_mod_and_export3 source

I received this result:

bzr: ERROR: Invalid http response for http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~exarkun/pyopenssl/pkcs12_mod_and_export3/changes: Unable to handle http code 502: Bad Gateway

To fix this bug, Launchpad should either never go down, or preferably give a better error from the front-end http proxy when it is.

I got a similar message when trying to install launchpad on my 9.10 Beta system.

$ bzr --no-plugins cat http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~launchpad-pqm/launchpad/devel/utilities/rocketfuel-setup > rocketfuel-setup
bzr: ERROR: Invalid http response for http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~launchpad-pqm/launchpad/devel/utilities/rocketfuel-setup/.bzr/branch-format: Unable to handle http code 502: Bad Gateway

This probably indicates a problem with a network firewall between you and Launchpad. Can you post the error from ~/.bzr.log?

There is no firewall between me and Launchpad which would be blocking anything related to bzr. The problem appears intermittently on a single machine, arising for a few minutes and then going away again.

I lost the .bzr.log file for this incident months ago, so I can't supply it.

Sorry, my comment #3 was wrong and the original description is probably correct: this is coming from the front-end between the http server in the Launchpad environment.

As a workaround if you run 'bzr launchpad-login' or use a bzr+ssh url you will avoid the problem.

On our end, yes, it should just never flake out.
