Bug Description

I'm using the ponoko template for inkscape. When moving my objects around a bit it crashes all the time. Sometimes it does an emergency save, sometimes not.

Inkscape 0.47 r22583 (Dec 11 2009) running on openSUSE 11.2 - 32bit

Can you attach the file that causes the crashes?

This is the file that currently gives me a headache.

It should be noted, that my inkscape revision also crashes quite often using other files as well. I'm not sure it is specific to the attached document.

Well, I'm just poking in the dark...

On my main PC I'm starting to suspect it's more like an X or graphics driver issue, as gimp for example also likes to crash on me in the same manner. But on the other hand it also happens on my laptop as well, so maybe it's a KDE4 thing. I wish I could say for sure. If there's a way to get more meaningful error logs, just say the word.

I'm experiencing this same problem with multiple separate files.

It's hard to reproduce reliably, but sometimes when I am moving an object the application crashes on me. I've had to get into the habit of hitting Ctrl+S every time a change something just in case the next action causes a crash.

I'm running the latest stable version of Inkscape (0.47) on my Asus notebook, which is running Windows 7.

@Drew - would you be willing to test the prerelease version of 0.48 [1] or a current development snapshot build [2] to see if these random crashes still occur? Possibly you see the effect of bug #221712 “GDI object leak in Pango hangs Inkscape after some time” or bug #463602 “crash when node-editing pattern-filled object” (in case the crash happens when moving an object with all nodes selected in the node tool) - both bugs have been fixed for the upcoming release (0.48).

Else it would be helpful if you could attach one of the files that caused Inkscape to crash when moving an object.

@~suv: Okay, I installed 0.48 and have not experienced this issue once in two days of working with the same files. Thanks for the suggestion! Incidentally, I realized after my initial post that the problem seemed to crop up more often when I was trying to move multiple separate objects or a group of objects at once.

@Drew - thanks for testing and reporting back. If the random crashes happen with the prerelease version too, please file a new report for it and attach the file you had been working with as well as a list of the actions you last did before Inkscape crashed.

Inkscape does have an 'autosave' feature since 0.47: <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.47#Autosave>

You can launch Inkscape from the terminal and copy the error messages you see there when Inkscape crashes. Or - if you are familiar with using gdb, you can try to get a backtrace from the crash: <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Debugging_Inkscape#Debugging_Tips_for_Linux>

Well, 0.48 is now available on openSUSE as well, and I'm still getting the same weird crash... the error message is the same as in my first posts.

I installed the debug information from the repository, but that is only for 0.47 :-(

Anyhow, I've compiled 0.48 from source and I'll try to make it crash as well. So far this hasn't happened yet. One notable difference was file size ( I just ran configure && make && make install ). Mine: ~120MB, suse-rpm: 12MB

Do you use Inkscape with a tablet? Does the crash also happen if you use Inkscape with the normal mouse, without tablet?

Possibly related:

No, I use a quite old Microsoft IntellyEye USB mouse.

If disconnecting mouse/tablet can cause this, then maybe I'm affected as well. I'm regularly getting messages in system log about disabled USB ports/hub (mainboard internal stuff) due to EMI. Depending on where my mouse is plugged in, my keyboard gets reset as well. I noticed it as the EL-backlight gets turned on every time it happens, which is quite annoying due to the inverter's high frequency noise. It could be either my mouse going bad or the mainboard's usb hardware.

well, I did a few tests. It seems that at least 2 of the mainboards onboard usb ports have this problem, and my mouse happens to be in one of them.

Tomorrow I'll install 0.48 on my laptop and see how it works there.

Hm. OK. It seems I definitely have suffered from the USB unplugging bug.

I've plugged my mouse into one of the known good ports (now I can't use my printer anymore...), and inkscape hasn't crashed for quite some time now. With the mouse in one of the bad ports it would say sayonara after 45 seconds of using it. I think a coincidence of moving/manipulating an object and vanishing of the pointer device makes it crash.
